Fund selectors dismiss Barnett/Woodford comparisons

Industry rallies round Invesco manager following WEIF gating

Mark Barnett's Invesco High Income and Invesco Income funds are "more balanced" than Neil Woodford's, according to industry commentators who do not expect those funds to suffer a similar fate to Woodford Investment Management's.

The LF Woodford Equity Income fund (WEIF) was gated in June after a run of investor redemptions led to a liquidity crisis, before it was announced the fund would be wound up four months later. The fund's assets had sunk by two-thirds in the space of two years, forcing Woodford to sell his most liquid assets in order to meet those redemptions. The episode shone a light on open-ended equity funds that hold unquoted stocks, of which Barnett's funds, inherited from Woodford upon his departure from Invesco in 2013, are the most high profile.
