Water scarcity presents both one of the biggest headwinds, and one of the biggest opportunities, for investors, according to industry commentators, who said “massive investments in water-related infrastructure will be required” over the coming months and years to prevent shortages.
This comes following dwindling water reserves in Norway, which are now threatening the country's key source of energy - hydroelectric power. At the end of September, state-owned grid operator Statnett SF - which saw its operating revenue hit NOK5.3bn (£456m) in H1 - warned of a "pressed situation" in the south of the country. "There is now a very low amount of water, for this time of year, in many of the reservoirs here," the energy provider said.
