A long night awaits for COP28 negotiators, as the presidency attempts to break impasse over proposals to phase out unabated fossil fuels and fears grow that talks could end without a deal

Weary climate diplomats have geared up for another marathon day at the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai today, after the latest draft of the key negotiating text was met with a torrent of criticism from countries yesterday (11 December) evening. Officially, the UAE COP28 presidency has said it is still aiming to wrap up proceedings tonight with an ambitious new agreement, but with significant disagreements remaining over the future of fossil fuels and climate adaptation goals most observers expect the tense negotiations to rumble on well into Wednesday.
